The first "luminarie", as historic records show, first appared in the fifteenth century, during the time where the "PARATURA(luminarie) (decorations of profane or of cult places) gains the favours of the court and the aristocracy of Naples, big spenders in shows and celebrative events.
Later on it spread gaining the favours of the crowds thanks to the initiative of the clergy.
The craftmanship started to develop into an art, seeing the school of Lecce, Apulia, as true leading masters, which introduced several new elements, expanding away from the traditional lines, especially under the baroque influence.
The "galleries" are a perfect example.

T he MARIANO craftmanship started to develop in 1894 with the decoration of streets and squares for the patron saint festivities. In the first periods oil lamps where employed hanging them on wooden frames, to be replaced later on by carbide lamps. Electrical light bulbs begun to be used in the early 1930s.
Starting from a piece of firwood, whith master's art and much inspiration, the craftsmen toil until they are satisfied with their endeavours to create embroideries and new designs, but keeping in with a long artistic tradition.
As result open spaces are adorned with thousands of minute light bulbs creating virtual threedimensional themes, from pagodas to galleries to enchanted spaces, all embroidered out of light and colour.

In the latest decades, the number of festivites have grown: at first the Christmas festivities were considered appropriate occasions to be lit festively, especially when it means to brighten the dark winter days and nights.
Then the requirements for "luminarie" grew and expanded into other occasions such as inaugurations of important shops, commercial centers, new streets or bridges, anniversaries of important dignitaries, or to celebrarate important birthdays, weddings historical events and other social occasions.
Today the MARIANO operates on international market while keeping its characteristic of "artisanal" production and exports, all over the world, the old art of italian "luminarie" together with new production realizations.
More and more sophisticated materials are utilized all technically correspondent to the present day stringent standards and regulations.
Such materials are produced in 3.000 square meters of warehousing on a total space of about 8.100 square meters, located in Corigliano d'Otranto, Lecce, Apulia (Southern Italy).

Development of a new project.
Today MARIANO identifies at first a subject or theme to be developted, and his designers develop first sketches.
These are then submitted as a first proposal, which after acceptance by client, prompts a local survey by MARIANO, to adapt and fit the proposed designs to the actual environment the work is to be inserted.
After this survey a final project proposal is drawn, with a detail on contents and specifications, for final approval, after which the MARIANO works begin with the final creation and production.
MARIANO does not sell its masterpieces Instead MARIANO rents the features for a given period of time, during which MARIANO installs the features, maintains them during the contract period, and disassembles them at the end.
Which ensures that a client's only responsability is to supply structural hook-up permits for the site of erection and sufficent electrical power to feed MARIANO's LUMINARIE.
