oil luminarie, end of 1800s

The word ‘luminaria', from the Latin word ‘lumen', literally means ‘object that gives out light', but in a wider meaning it is also used to indicate the ‘lights' festivity'. We can't date exactly its birth but in all probability its diffusion is in the baroque epoch, together with the affirmation of the Confraternities. Anyway since its origin the ‘luminarie' are certainly associated to the religious celebrations in Saints honour, Patron Saints Festivity, and consist in oil lamps often provided with lampshades, made in coloured paper. In the 1700s the light decorations were ligneous scaffolding leaned to the building's front end that supported innumerable coloured glasses, containing oil and a wick for the lighting. Later, for the illumination oil lamps made in earthenware were used: they were in a small cylinder of white, red and green paper. The diffusion of the luminaries in Italy came up in the 1800's, when the scaffoldings came unhooked from the buildings' front end becoming self-carried powered by gas.

The Mariano Light Sculpture has been established at the end of 1800s, when Salvatore began the ‘paratore' job, was followed by Eliseo and now by Lucio Mariano. Mariano Light still brings the secrets of an ancient art in the Third Millennium, due to the technical ability, the fantasy and mostly, of all the passion of three generations. From the carbide's lamp to the electricity, from the incandescent lamp, white or coloured, to the LED light, Mariano Light transformed the ‘luminarie' in light's architecture, suitable not only for religious festivities but also for any commemorative event.
